How to Stay in Touch with Previous Colleagues or Employers

Stay in contact with your coworkers, direct reports, and managers from previous roles. This is one of the best ways to increase your odds of finding and landing your dream career. There are many professionals that have landed positions due to relationships they’ve fostered and maintained with previous employers. Below are a few pointers for touching base in a genuine manner.

  • Engage on LinkedIn – Connect on LinkedIn with the coworkers you created meaningful professional relationships with. Whenever you see they received a promotion or completed an interesting project, like and comment on their post so you stay top of mind. You may have been an exceptional employee, but if you don’t stay in touch with them, it may suggest that you’re disinterested in working with that person or for the company in the future. Follow them on other appropriate social media platforms, such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to demonstrate your interest in staying in touch.
  • Send Email Updates – Once you have captured your former supervisor’s or colleagues’ personal and professional emails, consider sending quarterly email updates in regards to your interests and accomplishments. This can include consulting work, professional leadership groups, or volunteer opportunities. Craft personal messages to each contact, and be sure to take an interest in them as well. Ask how they are doing, how the team is, and the sort of projects they are currently working on. By doing so, you are establishing a worthwhile connection and positioning yourself as a viable future candidate.
  • Find and Add Value – Even if you aren’t currently working in this field, think about how you would be able to help these contacts. If you can serve as an advisor, consultant, or confidante to them, provide assistance when you’re available. This will help you connect with them on a personal level as well as a professional level. They will think of you when a role arises that suits you and your background.
